From the ground, the Richat Structure barely registers — a low rise of ridges you could cross without noticing. From above, it resolves into a target: ring inside ring inside ring, so symmetrical that astronauts have used it as a naked-eye landmark for orbital navigation since the earliest crewed missions.

Plato's Atlantis is built from alternating rings of land and water around a central island. Seen from space, Richat's rings look like a natural version of the same plan.
At roughly 40 km across, the structure is large enough to read as a "metropolis" in the way Plato's account implies, rather than a single building or village.
Plato describes builders quarrying white, black, and red stone. Richat's exposed rock and the buildings of nearby towns do show this same palette.
Atlantis is named for its first king, Atlas — a name later attached to the Atlas Mountains of northwest Africa, a few hundred miles north of the structure.
A freshwater spring still surfaces at the site today, and the surrounding region shows signs of ancient river channels from the humid "Green Sahara" period.
The rings themselves are the product of roughly 100 million years of uplift and erosion — a process on a geological timescale, not something that could have been shaped or inhabited within human history.

No mainstream geologist or classicist accepts the Richat–Atlantis identification. The structure's formation predates Plato's flood by tens of millions of years, and no archaeological trace of a city has ever surfaced there. What makes the Eye of the Sahara remarkable doesn't need a lost empire to justify it — a landform this symmetrical, carved by nothing but time and wind, is already strange enough to earn its name.
